A new study released in the prestigious Spine Journal (15 May 2013 -
Volume 38 - Issue 11 - p 953–964) sheds some light on this question.
Apparently, the type of physician that you see first, will significantly increase your chances of getting back surgery. From the journal article:
"Approximately 42.7% of workers who first saw a surgeon had surgery, in
contrast to only 1.5% of those who saw a chiropractor."

of the story... "If you go to Midas, you're gonna get a muffler. If
you go to a surgeon, you're gonna get surgery." (thank you Dr. Perman
